Basic info before we start.
The first thing you need in order to get your site online is a domain name and a hosting package. A domain name is your online address eg. www.gsvr.com.au. This is simply an address and nothing more, think of it as your street address for your home. You need a house at that address, this is what your hosting is, a space for your website to live. GSVR web hosting provides affordable hosting packages for new users like you for only $2.20 per month and domain names for as low as $12.50 per year. Web hosting packages come in all different shapes and sizes. We will be starting with the introduction size hosting for this guide to keep pricing to a minimum. Hosting plans are scalable and you can upgrade to a larger and more powerful package when you need to. GSVR will take care of that for you!
Step 1: Registering a Domain Name
If you want to follow this guide open a new window and navigate over to GSVR domain registration page here. You will then be asked to type in the domain you would like. If you scroll down on the registration page you will notice there are some helpful tips on selecting the right domain name for you.
For the purpose of this guide, we will register a domain also. We are going to register UNIGAT.com.au
Once you have selected your domain name hit the “search domain” button, this will now take you to another page, this will display available domain TLDs. TLD is short for top level domain which is basically .com .net .org etc. The screen will look like the following:
For this guide, we will be registering the .com.au version of the domain. Australian domains can only be registered for a minimum of 2 years. There is no limit to the number of domains you can register, you can select as many as you like.
Once you have decided your exciting new domain name click the Add button, the “Add” button will then turn into a “check out” button, go ahead and click the checkout button. You will then need to fill in your details. When registering a “.au” you are required by Australian law to provide a valid Australian Business Number or ABN. You can find your ABN on the ABN Lookup website. If you do not have a ABN you can either register a .com or any other TLD that does not have a .au prefix. If you would like to register an ABN so you can have your own .au domain head over to ABR website or simply Google register for an ABN this is run by the Australian Government.
You only need to complete 2 sections of this form.
- Registrant Name – YourName on your ABN number
- Registrant ID – Your ABN Number
Remember you can get this information from the ABN lookup website and doing a search for your name.
Step 2: Select a Hosting Package
At this stage, we want to create a hosting package first so you can click the [No Hosting! Click to Add] at the top of the page.
Once you have clicked the [No Hosting! Click to Add] link you will then be taken to the hosting packages page, for the purpose of this guide we will be using “The Beginner” plan. This is the entry level hosting plan which allows you to install WordPress and create an email account. Click the Order Now button on The Beginner plan.
Once you have selected the Order Now button you will be taken to the next registration page. Hit the Use button to get to the next step.
This will then ask for the billing cycle, you can pay monthly or yearly. You can choose by selecting the drop down menu at the bottom of the screen. Once you have decided just hit the continue button on the right hand side of the screen.
Next step is to confirm your domain registration details. If you have been following correctly you should see the following page with [Has Hosting] at the top of the page like below. Now click Continue.
